Mental Health Awareness Week takes place from Monday 13 – Sunday 19 May 2024. The theme, as set by the Mental Health Foundation, is “Movement: moving for our mental health.” Embracing this year's theme, it is crucial to highlight the integral role that sports and exercise can play in supporting and enhancing mental health. 

In the realm of sports performance, mental health issues can be a concern. Sports people, from amateur athletes to seasoned professionals, may often face significant mental pressure. Not only does mental health affect their personal lives, but it can also severely impact their performance on the field. This intense stress can sometimes lead to physical symptoms, such as fatigue, a weakened immune system, and even injuries. 

Yet, while sports can induce stress, they can also serve as an incredibly powerful tool to combat mental health issues. To mark Mental Health Awareness Week UK 2024, we bring together insights from two remarkable individuals, Conor O'Keeffe, an ultra-endurance athlete, and Conor Meyler, an All-Ireland winning Gaelic player, shedding light on the indispensable link between mental fortitude and athletic prowess.
